How should a dog jumper fit?

Snug, not tight. Where a jumper should sit, the two-finger test, and the signs it is the wrong size.

Updated 3 October 2026

A jumper that fits well stays put, keeps the chest and back warm, and gets forgotten about within a minute of going on. One that does not fit gets scratched at, twisted round or wriggled out of.

The short version

Snug, not tight. The jumper should follow the body without squeezing it, and your dog should move exactly as they do without it.

Check these five things

  1. Neck. You can slide two fingers between the neckline and your dog's neck. It should not press on the throat when they lower their head to sniff.
  2. Chest. The fabric lies flat around the ribcage without stretching the knit open. Two fingers should fit underneath here too.
  3. Front legs. The leg openings sit clear of the armpits. Rubbing here is the most common cause of a dog refusing a jumper.
  4. Length. The back ends around the base of the tail, or a little before. For male dogs, check the underside is cut short enough to stay dry.
  5. Movement. Walk, sit, stretch, shake. Nothing should ride up, twist or restrict.

Signs it is too small

  • The knit is visibly stretched over the chest or shoulders.
  • Your dog takes short steps with the front legs.
  • Red marks or flattened fur under the legs after wearing.

Signs it is too big

  • The neckline slips over one shoulder.
  • Front legs step through the neck or body opening.
  • The jumper rotates as they walk.

Between sizes?

Go by chest and choose the larger size. A slightly long jumper is comfortable. A tight chest is not.

First time in clothes?

Put it on for a few minutes indoors with treats and praise, then take it off before they lose patience. Build up from there. Never leave a dog unsupervised in clothing, and take layers off indoors so they do not overheat.
